Why We Should 'Change The Chair' Not The Kid

Despite centuries of men and boys having an advantage in employment and school, today's boys and young men struggle with grades, graduation rates, further education, and mental health.

Youth suicide rates, especially for teenage males and men, and other preventable tragedies are rising. More than twice as many adolescent and teen boys overdose as girls, according to PBS.

Boy graduates are just marginally higher than economically disadvantaged students (82% vs. 80%).

Thus, the gender-based achievement gap is becoming one of American students' worst disadvantages.

This gap is most noticeable when intersecting disadvantages stack up. Black boys from economically deprived communities are more at danger of marginalization.

This tremendous achievement swing has numerous causes, too many to detail here, but all parents of boys should take note. Boys are affected nationwide regardless of ethnicity, class, or family background.

Due to all of these circumstances and the enormous pressure on youth to succeed, even the wealthiest youngsters are suffering.
