Yankees Linked to $1.5 Million Former Fan Favorite as Possible Trade Target

As the New York Yankees prepare for the 2024 season, a major concern arises: how will they fill the vacuum left by Gerrit Cole's injury.

But now that third baseman DJ LeMahieu is injured, could the Bombers consider trading for Detroit Tigers infielder Gio Urshela.

On March 18, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch proposed the idea. "Here's a fact: Gio Urshela isn't a lock to be the Tigers' everyday third baseman. Could the Yankees make a trade?" he asked on X (formerly Twitter).

LeMahieu was supposed to be the Yankees' starting third basemen. He is currently struggling with a bone injury in his right foot, which is jeopardizing his availability for Opening Day.

Oswald Peraza would have been the next in line to take his place, but he is now out with a shoulder injury. Oswaldo Cabrera, a utility fielder, remains an internal option.

In 48 plate appearances in spring, he has a.209/.292/.302 batting line. His temporary takeover of third base would leave New York's bench lacking depth.

That's where Urshela could come in. Prior to signing a $1.5 million contract with Detroit this winter, New York was interested in bringing the former Yankee back to the Bronx.

The 32-year-old played three seasons with the Yankees, playing for them from 2019 to 2021. His time in the Bronx produced some of his best work as a major leaguer, particularly at the plate.
